Should You Take Your Fiancé Ring Shopping?
The most nerve-wracking part of any proposal, save getting down on one knee, is buying the engagement ring. Buying an engagement ring is a big deal, not only because of what it represents, but also the fact that the ring is an investment itself. She will have to look at and wear this piece of jewelry for the rest of her life, so you want to make sure it’s the perfect fit for your bride-to-be. Many grooms today, rather than guess at what their fiance would like or stalk her Pinterest boards, are choosing to make ring-shopping a couple’s experience. Here are some of the pros and cons to taking your prospective spouse along for the ride:
Pros
- Size– A foolproof way to guarantee that the ring will indeed fit your fiance’s hand is to take her with you to get her finger sized, but don’t be surprised if she starts snooping around, eagerly awaiting the proposal.
- Color– If your bride decides to be more traditional and avoid the trend that is colored engagement rings, you still have to worry about the color of a “regular” diamond. The seemingly colorless diamond actually can fall into a category of colorless, near colorless, faint color, very light color, and light color, with various shades of rankings in each category.
- Shape– Diamonds come in all different shapes (i.e. round, emerald, princess, oval, pear). Your bride might have her heart set on a particular shape, but when she tries it on, she might decide a completely different shape would be better suited to her hand. By taking her with you to pick out the ring, she might stumble upon her dream ring she did not even know she wanted.
- Setting– Setting can make or break a ring and is really unique to each bride’s taste. For example, halo settings are a big trend in engagement rings, today. However, others’ stance is that the halo setting takes away from the centerpiece of the ring. Your bride can decide for herself which setting is right for her.
- Guaranteed approval– With all of the previous details decided on, your bride-to-be will be head over heels in love the ring that will quickly become her most prized possession.
Cons
- Risk of blowing the budget– You have every intention of sticking to your predestined engagement ring budget, but your girlfriend passes a display of engagement rings on the pricier side and falls completely in love. Every ring she tries on after gazing upon the “ring of her dreams,” will bring some level of disappointment.
- Loss of “surprise factor”– Part of the nervous excitement of a proposal is that it is unexpected. While her woman’s intuition will let her know something is brewing, she might not be able to put her finger on it. You have to decide for yourself if the moment will be that much sweeter if she had no idea that you had even considered engagement rings.
- She will question if you like the ring– If you surprise her with a ring of your choosing, she will know that you wholeheartedly approve of the ring she will be wearing for the rest of her life. She will automatically think of you when she glances down at it in the middle of the day and will know that you chose this just for her. She will not have even the slightest doubt that you thought another ring would better compliment her.
- She will be eagerly awaiting you popping the question– Every holiday between ring shopping and the date of the proposal will be plagued with a sense of “Is this it?” “I wonder if he put the ring in my stocking?” or “Would he really propose on Valentine’s Day?”
Regardless if you take her ring shopping or not, the two of you should be on the same page to know that you are at the point in your relationship where marriage is more than a definite possibility. At the end of the day, your fiancé is in love with you, so she will love any ring you use to accompany the most important question of her life: Will you marry me?
